On January 11th, we went to Cœur De Pirate’s concert in a private venue on St-Catherine, downtown Montreal. Cœur de Pirate is one girl: Beatrice Martin. The tattooed blondie might still be young but she already has two albums since she became Coeur De Pirate and her singles have climbed up the Canadian charts in no time. The Juno nominated artist received a warm welcome from her hometown as she entered the stage. She performed 16 songs, mostly from her recent album Blonde which has been in stores since November. Beatrice speaks English and French but sings mostly in French (except for one album from back in February: Armistice, which is a duo she formed with Jay Malinowski, member of the band Bedouin Soundclash). Her beautiful voice and talent takes you on a wonderful journey. Her latest songs are about growing up and the troubles of love, subjects her fans can fully relate to.

For this intimate show, Cœur De Pirate really blew our minds with her unique sound and charming performance. Everyone was enjoying themselves. Beatrice sang a nice balance of new songs as well as old favourites.

As always, she was joined on stage by four musicians: Renaud Bastien (guitar), Emmanuel Éthier (violin), Alexandre Gauthier (double bass) and Julien Blais (drums). You can tell in her new songs that she has been inspired by the French music of the 60’s and that she has grown up since her debut album.

The crowd laughed as the band brought a more “country” sound to the songs. After a while, Beatrice’s musicians left her alone with the piano for us to hear her perform her candid melodies. She sang Francis, an old personal favorite for many of her fans. The band returned on stage to finish it up with her latest single, Adieu, and got the crowd happy with this catchy rhythm.

There was no opening act that night as it was a special intimate performance put on by Musique Plus, the French relative of Much Music. The sweetness in Beatrice’s voice was enough to satisfy the crowd.

It was a fabulous night! If you don’t speak French, Coeur De Pirate might become the reason to learn it so you can understand her wonderful lyrics! Check her out! Visit: for more on Coeur De Pirate.
