We recently spoke with singer/songwriter Dan Oig, from Kamloops BC! His new album “Love” was released this summer. Take a listen to some of his music here: http://www.myspace.com/danoig Also be sure to follow him on twitter http://twitter.com/#!/danoig and visit http://www.danoigmusic.com/ for all Dan related things

Here’s what Dan had to say:

CT: Your music has a very chill, relaxing vibe to it, what inspires you most when creating songs?

Dan: Life is my inspiration! I find inspiration strikes me very randomly throughout the day. I’ll see someone do something nice for another person and it inspires me to write a song about it, or I’ll watch a really good movie and it’ll make me wanna write a tune. I think you’re a product of your environment too. I grew up in Kamloops, B.C. It’s hot in the summer and I spent a lot of time at the beach with friends which I think helped inspire my style of music.

CT: What instruments do you play?

Dan: I play guitar mostly. I can also play the drums, bass and a little bit of the piano. Drums are my second favourite cause I get to wail on things with sticks! Haha.

CT: How long have you been making music and when did you decide it’s what you wanted to do as a career?

Dan: I’ve been playing guitar since I was 10 but I never really took it seriously until I was about 18. I started singing when I was 18 too. When I first started singing my parents could barely stand it! I don’t really have ‘natural’ singing ability – I kinda just taught my self as I went. Then I started getting better and decided to start writing songs. I think I’ve always had a natural ability to write songs. It just flows out of me so effortlessly. I get the most unique feeling when I start writing a song – it’s hard to describe – but I’ve never felt anything like it. When I sit down and write a new tune, I can hear the other instruments in my head, I can hear it in a stadium with thousands of people, it’s my dream!

I decided I wanted to play music forever because I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. People would always ask me what kind of career I wanted and I never had an answer except “music”.

CT: What is your biggest dream/goal you hope to achieve as an artist?

Dan: My biggest goal would be to tour the world, play for millions, sell millions, be heard by millions – not for the fame, but because when I write a song I make sure I talk about things that are useful in day-to-day life. I write love songs, yeah, but a lot of my other tunes are just about being a good person and always trying to better yourself. That’s what I’m all about so I guess it comes out in my music.

CT: Describe yourself in 5 words

Dan: Determined. Goofy. Intelligent. Loving. Inspired.

CT: What has been your greatest accomplishment or moment you’ve been most proud of so far?

Dan: Well I got to open for ZAPPACOSTA when I was on tour a month ago. He was big back in the day and it felt like a pretty cool accomplishment. But the biggest accomplishment in my mind is when people tell me they find my music inspiring. I LOVE inspiring other people. The world is sometimes hard to deal with – and if somebody can find an answer to a question, or takes inspired action as a result of one of my songs – then that’s the biggest goal that I could ever accomplish.

CT: What can we expect from you in the future?

Dan: LOTS! I’ve got so much to do with so little time! I want to record all my life, and as long as I’m recording I’ll be sharing the music with all my friends and fans and family, which is all basically the same thing! We’re all family. I want to record with all the artists that have inspired me like Jack Johnson or Jason Mraz or even rap artists like B.o.B. or K’Naan. I have a lot of musicians I look up to in the industry – and I plan on meeting as many of them as I can and make music with them!

CT: If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you HAVE to bring?

Dan: I would have to bring my guitar, I would bring a ‘how to survive on a desert island for dummies’ book, and I would bring a knife so I could catch food, make fire, protect myself, carve swear words into trees, stuff like that!

CT: If you could eat a meal with any person, dead or alive who would it be and why?

Dan: I would have to say Amy Winehouse. I would ask her why she didn’t go to Rehab! Just kidding. Any person, I would have a meal with B.o.B. the rapper. He’s pure inspiration to me. I do a lot of research on other artists and his story I find so cool and inspirational – I’d just wanna ask him as many questions as I could!

CT: Do you have a message to share with your fans?

Dan:Thank you so much for listening to my music. I put a lot of work into it and it feels so good to have people that take the time to visit my sites, write me notes, and tell their friends about my music (hint) haha! Without fans I’d be some weird guy listening to myself all day! Visit http://www.youtube.com/user/danoigmusic for Dan’s music and videos!
