iHeart Radio MMVA’s Recap

Missed the iHeart Radio MMVA’s? Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered! Here’s a full recap of the red carpet, performances, and award winners!

What better way to open up a Canadian award show than with a Canadian himself! Coleman Hell opened up the red carpet performing his upbeat song 2 Heads getting the crowd pumped up for the show!

Shortly after, repping Canada we have Shawn Mendes who pulled up to the red carpet driving in a black jeep! Shawn was nominated for six awards and performed at the show. Another fellow Canadian Alessia Cara was nominated for seven MMVA’s. Yes you read that correctly, seven. Alessia was tied with Drake for nominations, the Canadian pride is unreal!

Marianas Trench is always surprising us with their red carpet entrances, this year they rolled up in a golf cart. All of them looking more ready than ever to put a few holes!

What’s a red carpet without a couple of awards! The first award for Most Buzzworthy Canadian went to the man himself, Drake. If you thought it doesn’t get better than that, Drake also won Best MuchFact Video and Best Hip Hop Video. Director X also took home an MMVA for Best Director for Drake’s Hotline Bling video.

Red Carpet co-host and YouTuber Jus Reign and fellow YouTuber Lilly Singh better known for her YouTube name Superwoman joked around about being twins on the red carpet. They both grew up in Brampton and have the same last name. The two together are a dynamic duo, bringing laughter to everyone they are both inspirations to aspiring Canadian content creators.

Another award was given out on the red carpet for Best EDM Dance Video; this award went to Grandtheft ft. Lowell for “Quit This City”.

Second performance of the night was from Vine Star Ruth B, another fellow Canadian artist from Edmonton, Ruth wowed the crowd with a live performance of Lost Boy. Ruth started by posting a single line of this song to her vine account. People seemed to love it so much they wanted more! Ruth then wrote the whole song and took it to YouTube!

Another award is given out to Rajiv Dhall for Fan Fave Vine Musician! Rajiv has nearly 2 Million Vine followers! It is no surprise his fans pulled through and helped him win the award.

Canadian indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara pulled up on the red carpet in a classic Toronto double decker sightseeing bus! It doesn’t stop there; on the bus with them were fifteen sets of identical twins! Talk about creative red carpet entrances!

A couple more awards were given out on the red carpet moments before the show began. The Weeknd took home Canadian Single of The Year with his hit song Can’t Feel My Face. The Strumbellas took home the award for Best Rock Alternative Video and Justin Bieber took home the Fan Fave Artist or Group award!

Enough of the red carpet, let’s get to the actual show!

Opening the show was Macklemore singing Dance Off getting the crowd pumped up for the night. Amber Rose and Lilly Singh joined Macklemore on stage for a dance off! They both showed off their best moves on stage for twenty seconds each.

The following performance was by Alessia Cara singing her hit single, Wild Things. It is clear that Alessia is a natural on stage, her vocals are unreal and she looks like she was born to perform.

Fifth Harmony took home their first MMVA for Most Buzzworthy International Group!

Next were Shawn Hook and Hailee Steinfeld. The performance began with Shawn singing his song Sound Of Your Heart when Hailee joined him near the end of the song. It then transitioned to Hailee’s song Rock Bottom where the two performed a duet. These two have a natural chemistry together on stage! Hopefully we get to see more of them performing together in the future.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello took home the award for Best Pop Video for their song I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Hedley took the stage for a performance of Lose Control. With flashing lights and Jacob’s killer vocals, the performance already started off on a high note. Hedley has a lot of energy on stage which reflects on the crowd. Everyone jumped along with them and had an amazing time.

Nick Jonas took home the International Artist of The Year award. In his acceptance speech he took the opportunity to talk about the recent shootings in Orlando. He noted how it’s “moments like this where we can all come together”.

Tegan and Sara took the stage next performing their song Boyfriend. Talk about girl power! This duo has an insane amount of talent and gives Canadian music a great reputation.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home the award for International Duo. “Now that I have this award I’m pretty sure I’m Canadian now” – Macklemore. We would love to have you, Macklemore.

James Bay took the stage to perform his hit song Let It Go. The crowd was captivated seconds into the performance, James has a raw natural talent and his first time performing at the MMVA’s will definitely be remembered for a long time.

Shawn Mendes shared while backstage that his math exam is apparently more stressful than performing in front of all of these people. Me too Shawn, me too.

Harmonizers came through again as Fifth Harmony took home the award for Fan Fave International Group.

Desiigner hit the stage with an energetic performance of Panda. Desiigner definitely knows how to get a crowd pumped up. He jumped into the crowd and finished his performance in between a bunch of fans.

Shawn Mendes took the stage with a performance of his new song Treat You Better for the first time on TV! Shawn was all smiles during his performance and the fans could not stop singing the catchy tune.

#6God Drake took home the Video Of The Year award but unfortunately couldn’t make it to the show, don’t worry Drake, we still love you.

July Talk then performed their song Push and Pull, the entire performance was very well put together. Their stage presence is electrifying, vocals are amazing, and dancing is killer. A great performance from July Talk, I don’t think this will be the last time we hear of them.

Nick Jonas took the street to perform Close, and yes, he did get VERY close to a bunch of lucky fans. Nick took a different approach to his performance and instead of doing it on the stage his entire performance was done walking through crowds of fans.

Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s song I Know What You Did Last Summer took home another award, this time for Fan Fave Video. “Canada is the best!” Thanks Camila, you’re pretty cool too.

Alessia Cara then took home the award for Best New Canadian Artist. She mentioned how it’s amazing to be embraced by her hometown and stated how she can’t be prouder to be a Canadian in music.

Fifth Harmony closed off the show with a performance of their single Work From Home. The five girls definitely went out with a bang, their vocals all meshing together beautifully and their dancing was killer, as usual.
