On November 23rd we headed out to the Bronson Centre for a concert put on by the talented Canadian artist known as LIGHTS. The weather outside was frightful but everyone’s mood was quite delightful. By the time the singer took the stage, the crowd was buzzing with excitement. LIGHTS has the ability to light up the stage with her presence and engage her audience. You are swept away by her incredible voice and the emotion reflected in each of her songs. Her latest album, Siberia, is fantastic and hearing it live took it to a whole new level. The room vibrated with the beautiful melodies of her unique style. Accompanied by her live band made up of Maurie (drums), Aaron (keys, backing vocals) and Adam (keyboard, bass, DJ) they captivated the room with their high-energy performance. She sang a combination of new songs fresh off of Siberia as well as some of her older hits like “February Air” and “Ice”.  The crowd sang along, danced a little and waved their arms to the beat, the enjoyment evident by the smiling, upbeat crowd. Her fan base consists of a wide range of people, male and female, young and old, a sure sign of universal appeal.

Opening for LIGHTS was Rich Aucoin who got the crowd pumped with his performance. He incorporated well-known YouTube videos into his songs, which played on a big screen behind him. There were lots of opportunities for audience participation, an especially memorable moment being when he brought out a giant parachute, enveloping the crowd in colour and bringing back childhood memories.

After Rich came Nightbox, a band with members from Ireland, Canada and the U.S. These guys are great entertainers and were truly a perfect choice as an opener for LIGHTS. Their energy is contagious and their music just makes you want to dance.

After the concert a crowd of people formed by the tour bus, waiting for a glimpse of the singer’s mega-watt smile. The night was cold; this year’s first bit of snow lying fresh on the ground. Suddenly a small figure dressed in a black parka stepped out of the building. The fans cheered as LIGHTS came to say hello and to warm each person with a hug.

It was a fabulous night, surrounded by wonderful people and great music. I strongly recommend that you check out these artists the next time they’re in your town!
